This session focused on how the national CLEAR team supported two NHS trusts with their elective recovery plans and heard from senior leaders from both organisations who shared their challenges and progress.

The CLEAR national faculty was asked to review patient flow through theatres at the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT) and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust (QEHKL) and recommend new models of care and workforce.

After talking to more than 100 members of staff and reviewing 110,000 operation records at ESHT, the CLEAR team identified 10% potential productivity gains. This included reducing the length of stay through the introduction of a seven-day physiotherapy service and integration of the Foundry system into normal working practices.

The focus at QEHKL was on trauma and orthopaedics, with the trust facing increasing patient complexity and a high number of late cancellations. Data analysis of more than 100,000 patient records and engagement with staff led to the team recommending a new elective care coordinator to reduce avoidable cancellations, nurse-led discharges, and increasing full day trauma lists, with a forecast 12% productivity gain.
